A weekly cycle is a swing you can measure
Two troughs and the crest between them are enough to start. A feeling about the trend is not a count.
On the first Thursday of the intensive, someone usually arrives with a story and no troughs. The story may be intelligent. It is still not a cycle. A weekly cycle, in the way this desk uses the word, is a swing you can point at: a low, a high after it, and a later low.
Start with the weekly sheet
Daily bars chatter. The weekly bar is slow enough that a swing has to earn its place. Clip the weekly sheet to the board and ignore the daily until the week-count exists. If you cannot see two troughs without squinting at a single wild day, you do not have a weekly cycle yet.
Pick the last trough that a stranger could also see. Then walk backward to the trough before it. The crest is the highest weekly bar between those two lows, not the price you wish you had sold. Count the weeks from trough to trough, including the starting week once. Write the number in the margin. That number is the length of the completed swing.
A gold sheet we still pass around
One historical gold sheet we use in the room ran eighteen weeks from trough to trough, with the crest in week eleven. The next rise failed in week seven. People who only remembered “gold goes up into the new year” called that failure a surprise. On the sheet it was a shorter swing than the one just completed. Surprise is what you feel when the week-count was never written down.
The same sheet also shows the opposite case: a later swing that carried past week eleven and kept going. Length is not a law. It is a comparison. You are allowed to notice that this swing is young or old relative to the last one. You are not required to invent a reason in the same breath.
When the new trough is still forming
An unfinished trough is not a trough. Mark it with a question in the margin and keep the last completed length as your reference. Calling the low early is how journals get rewritten on Sunday night. The morning room’s rule is plain: last week’s cancellation mark is either hit or it is not. A near miss is a sentence for the notes, not a new count.
- Two visible weekly troughs, or you are not measuring a completed cycle
- The crest is the highest week between them, even if you do not like it
- Write the week-count before you write an opinion
- A forming low stays a question until price leaves it and does not return that week
Bring this habit to Silom and the first evening moves faster. The intensive assumes you will practice it on your own market for the remaining five Thursdays, until the count is boring enough to trust.
